A temperature response function for development of the chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum x morifolium Ramat.) Ciência Rural
Streck,Nereu Augusto.
Developmental models can help growers to decide management practices, and to predict flowering and harvest time. Currently, a double exponential function is proposed as a generalized temperature response function for chrysanthemum. This function is not the most appropriate because its parameters lack biological meaning. The objective of this study was to develop a nonlinear temperature response function of chrysanthemum development that has parameters with biological meaning. The proposed function is a beta function with three parameters, the cardinal temperatures (minimum, optimum, and maximum temperatures for development), which were defined as 0, 22, and 35ºC. Published data of temperature response of development of three cultivars, which are...

Alkaloids and acetogenins in Annonaceae development: biological considerations Rev. Bras. Frutic.
González-Esquinca,Alma Rosa; De-La-Cruz-Chacón,Iván; Castro-Moreno,Marisol; Orozco-Castillo,José Agustín; Riley- Saldaña,Christian Anabi.
Chemical studies of the plant family Annonaceae have intensified in the last several decades due to the discovery of annonaceous molecules with medicinal potential (e.g., benzylisoquinoline alkaloids and acetogenins). Approximately 500 alkaloids have been identified in 138 Annonaceae species in 43 genera. In addition, until 2004, 593 annonaceous acetogenins (ACGs) had been identified, from 51 species in 13 genera. This suggests that plants from this family allocate important resources to the biosynthesis of these compounds. Despite the diversity of these molecules, their biological roles, including their physiological and/or ecological functions, are not well understood. In this study, it was provided new data describing the variety and distribution of...

Annual and daily patterns of calling activity in male Scinax fuscomarginatus (Anura: Hylidae) from Central Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Souza,Antonio Olímpio de; Oliveira,Seixas Rezende; Dias,Gardênia Proto; Bastos,Rogério Pereira; Morais,Alessandro Ribeiro de.
ABSTRACT Bioacoustics is an effective way of recording detailed data during population surveys and monitoring. In the present study, we used an automated digital recorder (ADR) to describe the temporal variation in the calling activity of Scinax fuscomarginatus (Lutz, 1925) in central Brazil. We also evaluated the role of climatic variables (air temperature and precipitation) on calling activity by using a Generalized Additive Model (GAM). We conducted the recordings at five ponds in the Cerrado savanna of Rio Verde Municipality, in Goiás state between November 2013 and October 2014. The analysis of the 43.2 hours of acoustic recording showed that S. fuscomarginatus has a prolonged breeding pattern. The ADR provides a fine-scale description of the...

Assessing the sensitivity of bivalve populations to global warming using an individual-based modelling approach ArchiMer
Thomas, Yoann; Bacher, Cedric.
Climate change exposes benthic species populations in coastal ecosystems to a combination of different stressors (e.g. warming, acidification and eutrophication), threatening the sustainability of the ecological functions they provide. Thermal stress appears to be one of the strongest drivers impacting marine ecosystems, acting across a wide range of scales, from individual metabolic performances to geographic distribution of populations. Accounting for and integrating the response of species functional traits to thermal stress is therefore a necessary step in predicting how populations will respond to the warming expected in coming decades. Here, we developed an individual‐based population model using a mechanistic formulation of metabolic processes...

Biology, Flowering and Fruiting of the Cactus Opuntia spp.: A Review and Some Observations on Three Varieties in Morocco BABT
Arba,Mohamed; Falisse,André; Choukr-Allah,Redouane; Sindic,Marianne.
ABSTRACT The cactus is a succulent plant resistant to droughts. According to the recently reviewed classification, cacti belong to the family of Opuntiaceae Desv. (synon. Cactaceae Juss.) with Opuntia Mill. as the typical genus. This genus is economically the most important in the family, as it includes a group of cactus pear plants which play an important role in the agricultural systems of arid and semi-arid regions. Flowering of the cactus pear fruit is an important determinant of the fruit harvesting period. The goal of this paper is to present the physiology of the cactus pear and to explain in detail the biology of its flowering and fruiting processes. This study is also enriched by our observations on the flowering and fruiting of three varieties of...

Biomass production and grain yield of three sorghum lines difering in drought resistance Phyton
Castro-Nava,S; Ortiz-Cereceres,J; Mendoza-Castillo,M del C; Huerta,AJ.
The aim of this study was to determine the eficiency of drought classification criteria that we previously reported for our grain sorghum genotypes. Two tolerant genotypes of grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] (UAT-124 and UAT-152) and one susceptible (UAT-30) were subjected to drought under greenhouse conditions at either panicle initiation, flag leaf, or flowering. Results showed that the effects of drought depended on when drought stress occurred during development. Biomass of the three sorghum genotypes was significantly reduced at the flag leaf stage (48%) by drought stress, but the greatest reduction occurred in the susceptible genotype UAT-30 (71%). Results showed that biomass accumulation for UAT-124 and UAT-30 was...

Colony cycle of the social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Torres,Viviana O.; Montagna,Thiago S.; Fernandes,Wedson D.; Antonialli-Junior,William F..
Colony cycle of the social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán (Hymenoptera, Vespidae). This study describes some aspects of the colony cycle of the Neotropical social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis, from data obtained under field conditions. Our results showed that the colony cycle in M. consimilis is annual and asynchronous in relation to the months of the year. The colonies remained active for approximately eight months. Most of the abandonments were associated with natural causes, and were most frequent in the pre-emergence stage. The nests were constructed preferentially in man-made structures, especially in sites protected from direct sunlight and rain. Colony foundation was either by haplometrosis or pleometrosis, being the first form predominant.

Comparing two versions of a non-linear model for simulating leaf number and developmental stages in maize based on air temperature Ciência Rural
Streck,Nereu Augusto; Gabriel,Luana Fernandes; Samboranha,Flavia Kaufmann; Lago,Isabel; Schwantes,Ana Paula; Schons,Alfredo.
The Wang and Engel (WE) model simulates crop development considering the non-linear response of plant development to temperature. Daily air temperature is the input for the temperature response function [f(T)] in the WE model, and because there are several approaches for computing daily temperatures, there are several ways to calculate the f(T). The objective of this study was to compare two versions of the WE model for simulating leaf number and developmental stages in maize, considering two approaches for imputing daily air temperature (daily mean air temperature and daily minimum/maximum air temperature). A two-year field experiment with the maize variety BRS Missões sown in several sowing dates was conducted in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State,...

Competition between the sibling species <i>Tisbe holothuriae</i> and <i>T. battagliai</i> (Harpacticoida) OMA
Bergmans, M.; Janssens, P.P.M..
The influence of the salinity on the performance of the sibling species <i>Tisbe holothuriae</i> and <i>T. battagliai</i> in pure and mixed cultures was studied, using laboratory stocks adapted to 32 pro mille for over 175 generations. Cohort studies show that <i>T. holothuriae</i> has higher growth rates (R0 and r) at 32 pro mille, <i>T. battagliai</i> at 20 pro mille. The latter's life cycle is much less affected by the difference in salinity. 'De Wit' replacement series were used to study competitive interactions. Without water renewal, <i>T. holothuriae</i> eliminates its sibling species in less than 2 generations, apparently through chemical interference. With water...
